From Rags to Riches.. or the closest we'll get to it

Day 1

After the morning routine of waking up, falling asleep, becoming irrationally angry with my alarm, finally rising and finally leaving, we set fourth for the first day of the 69th Festival de Cannes. I can't fathom the knowledge I now have only from one day experiencing the festival compared to the clusterf**k of this morning.

We are a rare breed of interested, intelligent students. The past few days have surprised me for a variety of reasons, one being our lack of basic human capabilities like reading a map or not all swarming inside the same café. However, for every one moment of annoyance for my counterparts there are 40 moments delineated by new friendships, laughter and kindness that overpower it all.

A group of students, including myself, set out to catch the 10:00 a.m. premiere of Imperium. Which was cancelled..? So, we sprinted to catch Division 19, which was also cancelled..?

*Ugh*

At the theatre which the latter was supposed to screen at, we ended up joining a film 15 minutes into the story. The movie was titled Courage, and my goodness it was not what I signed up for. This football flick included 75 percent football plays to establish plot, 10 percent praying, and 15 percent actual conflict. The movie will probably do well in the box-office, much because it's an underdog football film that celebrates Christianity. Every suburban father's dream. The acting is definitely awkward and some one liners are so poorly delivered it verges on humorous. However, the movie gained a lot of respect in my opinion when after presenting superficial struggle after superficial struggle (ex. the rival football game... I'm small and want to play at Texas... is that marijuana I smell?), the audience is presented with a legitimate and unexpected conflict within he main character Freddy (Finn Wittrock).

After Courage, we ventured next door to watch Attack of the Killer Donuts, which we expected to be poorly made and hilarious. 'Twas both. This film gave its audience some serious Sharknado vibes, with its awful acting, screenplay and special effects. It was quite entertaining though. Without going into much detail here are some notes I took while watching:

-Mood: Eating donuts on your diet cheat day, while dressed in red lingerie, matching boa and singing to Whiskers McFur the cat. Wait scratch that her face was just eaten off by the donuts.
-Future Goal: Having such an orgasmic reaction to a vegan donut that causes every male I'm with to become erect.
-New Career Option: Person who stands out of the frame and throws donuts at movings cars and people.

After our morning/afternoon films, we travelled back to Juan Les Pins for lunch, showers and going all out for the Café Society premiere. To be honest, today felt like it wasn't going so well. Our films were being cancelled and I had a bad blister on my ankle. Getting tickets to the premiere was a long shot but, eh, what was there to lose.

After standing outside the Majestic Hotel for two hours (first ones there, wa-hoo), my heart continued to sink. We were beggars, simply beggars. Begging children standing in the rain asking for what seemed like nothing to these cabillionare movie executives. And just when life was looking down, my angel appeared.

Thank you Mr. Swanky Pink Bowtie. I got the first ticket of the night! And managed another to have Eva Claire come into the premiere as well. A solid group of around five ended up gaining access to the premiere, which was magical.

The red carpet was an awesome experience, and we were able to see some celebrities. However, the best experience by far was the opening ceremony. With tributes to George Miller and Prince, one dance number and some dogs getting stuck behind the competition jury, the ceremony did not disappoint and was genuinely an amazing experience to have been a part of.

Café Society debuted. I will spare the next 1,200 words for a review, but regardless of opinion being able to watch a film in the same area as its maker feels surreal.

The night concluded with Steak and Shake's fries. Not too shabby day 1.
